Dr Arfa Syeda zehra, Pakistan South Asia Death, Obituary: Dedicated Teacher, Scholar, Feminist And Storyteller, Has Died

This morning brought the heartbreaking news that Dr. Arfa Syeda Zehra, lovingly known as Arfa Apa, has passed away in Lahore. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi ra’ajioon. Pakistan, and indeed South Asia, has lost one of its most brilliant intellectuals — a scholar, feminist, storyteller, and teacher whose grace and wisdom illuminated generations.

Dr. Arfa Syeda Zehra was not merely an academic; she was an institution in herself. Her eloquence could move hearts, her intellect could sharpen minds, and her compassion could heal spirits. Urdu bowed before her diction, for her language was music and her thoughts, pure poetry. A true scholar of humanism and equality, she embodied integrity and empathy in every word she spoke and every class she taught.

I had the privilege of being her student in Pakistan Studies 101. Her classroom was not just a place of learning — it was a sanctuary of curiosity, kindness, and reflection. I remember visiting her office often; our conversations were nourishment for the soul. She listened with patience, spoke with depth, and taught with love. Each interaction with her felt like stepping into a world where wisdom and warmth lived in harmony.

Once, she shared a story about her affection for Balochistan and its people. She recalled visiting Chagai, where a local family hosted her with great honor. During lunch, when she invited a young man serving her to join the meal, he smiled and said, “Nosho—Jaan,” meaning, “May this food serve as love to you and your soul.” She recounted that moment with her trademark tenderness, saying, “Kitne khoobsurat alfaaz the, yeh mein bata nahi sakti.” That was her essence — always finding beauty in humanity.

Today, that radiant soul has left us, leaving behind a silence that feels unbearably heavy. Her absence will echo deeply in every heart she touched. She taught us that education was not just about learning facts, but about becoming better, kinder humans.

Mat sahl hamein jaano, phirta hai falak barsoñ / tab khaak ke parde se insaan nikalte hain.
Such souls are rare, emerging after centuries. Pakistan has lost a towering figure — a voice of truth, wisdom, and compassion.

May Dr. Arfa Syeda Zehra rest in eternal peace, her words and spirit continuing to guide us through generations. My heartfelt condolences to her family, students, and all who were touched by her light.
